Latarnie McDonald brings over 12 years experience with depth involvement in a range of organic and sustainability sectors, throughout Australian and overseas.
Backed by the University of Sydney degree in science, majoring in food production, horticulture, animal health and business management, Latarnie enjoyed working with the food supply chain throughout 6 regions of Australia. This encompassed working with over 1500 producers, marketing and supply chain companies, improving: natural resources, ecology, water use efficiency, supply chain logistics, and profit margins.
As a consultant, examples of contracts Latarnie has won include working with:~
~ Australia’s’ longest running organic certification company to improve the communication of technical standards into practical methodologies and problem solving for businesses producing, importing and exporting organic products. This has further widened networks around Australia, from smaller local production groups to national companies for organic wine, cosmetics, fresh food wholesalers and exporters.
~ UK giant, Marks and Spencer required a review of Australian certified organic wool production and supply chains for woolen garments. This involved a complex global exercise in logistics as wool is perhaps the longest supply chain usually stretching over 3-5 continents.
~ Adelaide Farmers Market and Hilton Chefs - Developing organic food gardens to be included in the Hilton's cooking demonstrations to inspire households to improve their health, buy local, and learn about organic growing.
Organic standards notes: International organic standards implemented by IFOAM ensure standards for:
~ Environmental sustainability, ecology, & biodiversity, including no genetically engineered organisms.
~ Social justice of working conditions, fair pay, fair and humane working conditions.
~ Smart resource use to minimise energy consumption/carbon footprint….through recycling, producing fertilisers’ on-farm and locally, with minimal use of products from further a field.
~ Humane treatment of animals ensuring: open ranging on pasture (beyond free range); freedom from chemicals and antibiotics; humane treatment by humans.
~ Chemical free food & fibre production, from farm to plate or farm to fashion
